Boundary Lookups, District Maps and Place Data
This cluster answers "which official area is this point inside?" for the boundaries that are not enough like a county to live in the location hub. Use the ZIP code boundary viewer to see a ZCTA polygon, the area code finder for telephone regions, and the county boundary viewer when you want to trace an edge rather than just name it.
Administrative geography is layered, and the layers are built for different purposes: Census ZCTAs approximate postal delivery, school districts follow elected or appointed boards, congressional districts change every cycle, and area codes are telephone routing artefacts that no longer map cleanly onto places. A point can sit inside several of these at once, and the labels can disagree near edges. Each page names its dataset and vintage so you can tell which layer answered, and none of them should be used as a substitute for an official determination.
If you need the containing county or state from your own position, start with location and geocoding instead. Radial analysis around one of these boundaries belongs to radius and service areas, and mapping them yourself is covered by the map maker tools.
