For example, the meridian crosses eight countries on its way pole to pole — and Paris, the historic rival claimant, sits just 173 km of parallel arc east of it.

Simple workflow

How to use Prime Meridian Finder

One line through Greenwich became the world's zero — here is where it actually runs:

The Prime Meridian Finder highlights the 0-degree longitude line through Greenwich and shows which places it passes and how far yours sits from it. Search the map to explore the reference line that eastern and western hemispheres — and every clock on Earth — are measured from.

  1. 1Open the map.
  2. 2Follow the 0° line and related facts.

What people use Prime Meridian Finder for

1. Visiting the line, honestly

Tourists straddle the brass strip at Greenwich — but GPS reads about 102 metres east of it, because the modern reference meridian (IERS) differs from Airy's 1851 line. The finder shows the 0° your phone believes in.

2. Teaching time from geography

Every time zone is an offset from this line. Tracing it through France, Spain and Algeria makes UTC tangible. Follow with the Longitude Time Zone Estimator to price longitude in hours.

3. Hemisphere questions

East or west of the line decides half your hemisphere address. The Hemisphere Finder resolves the full set for any point.

4. History of a standard

Paris kept its own meridian until 1911 for time and longer on maps. Seeing how close the two lines run — Paris is 2.35° east — explains a century of cartographic rivalry.

Worked examples

Example · The 102-metre surprise

Stand on the Greenwich courtyard line and a GPS receiver shows longitude about 0.0015° — roughly 102 m — because satellite geodesy redefined zero slightly east of Airy's transit circle. The monument marks history; the satellites mark the standard.

Example · Accra nearly touches it

Ghana's capital Accra sits at 0.187°W — about 21 km of parallel arc from the meridian. Tema, Ghana's main port just east of the city, sits almost exactly on the meridian itself — about as close to 0° as a working harbour gets.

The Prime Meridian is the zero-longitude reference used to measure east and west

The modern international reference passes through Greenwich and provides the starting line for longitude. It is useful for understanding coordinate signs, global mapping and the historical basis of time-zone geography.

Civil time zones do not follow longitude lines exactly. Countries choose legal time boundaries for political and practical reasons, so zero longitude should not be confused with a time-zone boundary everywhere it crosses land.

How to interpret the result

The most common errors come from using a correct result to answer the wrong geographic question. Keep these points in mind for Prime Meridian Finder:

  • When teaching or writing about meridians, keep datum stories handy — Greenwich's brass line versus the GPS zero, a hundred metres east — because they illustrate, memorably, that coordinate systems are human agreements measured very precisely.
  • Click along a highlighted line and read coordinates back: watching latitude hold at 23.44° while longitude sweeps the planet turns an abstract parallel into a place you have walked, cursor-first.

Limits & appropriate use

The lines' limits are philosophical more than technical: they are agreements and astronomy, not fences. The tropics and circles drift with the axial tilt's slow oscillation, so any printed latitude ages; the meridian family exposes datum choice (Greenwich brass vs WGS84 zero, ~100 m apart); and the date line is national choices zig-zagging over geometry. Tools that present these as fixed truths are quietly lying; the honest presentation prints 'current ≈' and dates its tilt.

Practically, the lines are perfect calibration constants and teaching instruments, and they compose beautifully with the daylight and distance tools. There is almost nothing to escalate except expectations: border law, time-zone statute and maritime limits live in treaties and legislation, not in the graticule — and when someone asks whether their terrace is 'in the tropics' for regulatory purposes, the answer belongs to the statute book, with this page as the pleasant way to find the question.

  • Legal time zones → national statute, not meridian geometry.
  • Maritime limits → UNCLOS and national claims, not the graticule.
  • Survey-grade line positions → current-epoch tilt values from IERS.

Data & methodology

The workspace displays longitude zero and compares a point with the same latitude on that meridian; the result is a selected-coordinate comparison rather than a global nearest-point optimisation.

Key terms worth knowing

Meridian
A constant-longitude half-circle from pole to pole.
Precession
The slow wobble that ages constellation names like 'Capricorn'.

Editorial guidance: MapBench explains the method and limitations so the tool can be used as a transparent reference, not as a black-box answer. For legal boundaries, safety-critical routing, surveying, engineering, regulated decisions or official statistics, verify the result with the responsible authority or a qualified professional.

Category: Geographic Lines. Results are intended for everyday analysis and planning unless a page explicitly states otherwise.

Method, assumptions & limits

This tool’s method
The workspace displays longitude zero and compares a point with the same latitude on that meridian; the result is a selected-coordinate comparison rather than a global nearest-point optimisation.
Before relying on the answer
Check the coordinate and the geographic reference line being used. A named latitude or meridian is a reference, not a political boundary.
What the result cannot establish
Map projection and civil time-zone rules can differ from geometric reference lines. Use the appropriate administrative source for legal questions.

Coverage: Worldwide. Search, basemap and external data requests may use third-party services; browser-based does not mean every operation is offline. Read the source and licence notes, calculation methodology and privacy policy. If a result looks inconsistent, report a correction with the inputs and mode used.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers about the calculation, accuracy and appropriate use.

Why Greenwich?

International agreement adopted the Greenwich observatory meridian as the global zero.

Are generated lines geodesic?

The individual tool explains whether it uses great-circle, rhumb-line or simple coordinate geometry. Choose the method that matches your use case.

Can I export the geometry?

Where export is offered, use a geographic format such as GeoJSON or KML if you need to edit the result later.

Why can a line look curved on a map?

Map projections distort the spherical Earth. A shortest path on the globe can appear curved on a flat map.

Why was Greenwich chosen?

At the 1884 International Meridian Conference in Washington, delegates voted for Greenwich — Britain's charts and the Royal Navy's reach, plus the fact that most shipping already used Greenwich-based maps, carried the day. It was a vote, not a discovery.

Is the prime meridian a physical line?

Only as monuments and markers. The working definition is geodetic: the IERS Reference Meridian, maintained from satellite and Earth-rotation measurements, sits about 102 m east of the Greenwich brass strip.

Which countries does it cross?

Eight sovereign states: the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana. South of Ghana it is ocean all the way to Antarctica, where it reaches the pole.

How far is the meridian from the equator crossing?

The two lines cross at 0°, 0° in the Gulf of Guinea, about 550 km south of Ghana's coast — open ocean, sometimes called Null Island by map-makers for the data errors that pile up there.

Did other prime meridians exist?

Many — Paris, Ferro (El Hierro), Cadiz, and dozens of national zeros. Old maps must be read against their own meridian; a longitude from an 1800 chart may be offset by degrees from Greenwich.

Does the meridian move?

The IERS meridian is adjusted by centimetres as measurements improve; tectonic drift also carries Greenwich itself about 25 mm a year eastward on the Eurasian plate. Zero is a maintained convention.

What is 180° from it?

The antimeridian through the Pacific — the rough path of the International Date Line, which bends around nations instead of following the geometry.

Can I stand in both hemispheres at Greenwich?

Yes — east and west of the courtyard line is a two-step journey. With GPS zero 102 m away, purists can straddle the geodetic line on the park path nearby instead.
