Nearest Postcode From Your List Finder
Paste up to 50 UK postcodes or US ZIPs and rank resolved representative points by straight-line distance. The codes are sent to postcode lookup providers.

Rank resolved representative postcode points, not exact addresses or road journeys.
How to use Nearest Postcode From Your List Finder
Your candidates, the point's verdict:
Enter a target point and up to 50 full UK postcodes or five-digit US ZIPs. The tool requests representative coordinates from postcodes.io or Zippopotam and ranks successfully resolved codes by spherical distance. Unmatched codes are omitted, so check the returned list.
- 1Set the target point.
- 2Paste the list or drop a .txt/.csv file.
- 3Press “Find the nearest” and read the ranking.
What people use Nearest Postcode From Your List Finder for
1. Depot and warehouse assignment
Compare candidate depot postcodes by straight-line distance. Confirm the actual depot address and road route before making an assignment.
2. Territory coverage checks
Compare a point with a list of candidate postcodes. This tool does not identify uncovered customers or create territories; for an illustrative separate diagram see the Voronoi Map Generator.
3. Clinic and service routing
Use the ranking as an initial geographic comparison, not as a medical referral or emergency-service decision.
4. Franchise protection checks
Screen candidate postcodes for approximate separation; verify exact locations and any contractual requirements independently.
Worked examples
If a list contains several UK or US codes, only successfully resolved entries are ranked. A nearer code outside the submitted list is not considered.
A provider’s representative postcode coordinate may differ from the actual address. Straight-line distances can differ from road distances.
How the matching works
The honest machinery behind the winner.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Resolve candidates | UK codes go to postcodes.io; US ZIPs go to Zippopotam |
| Measure | Spherical distance from the target to each resolved representative point |
| Rank | Show the returned results in increasing distance |
| Unresolved | Omitted; compare the input with the result list |
Up to 50 entries per run. The workspace sends codes to the providers; do not submit sensitive lists without reviewing their terms.
Data & methodology
Bulk postcodes.io lookup for UK codes, Zippopotam for US ZIPs, haversine ranking, all client-side.
For source details, licences and model limitations, see Data Sources and Methodology.
Editorial guidance: MapBench explains the method and limitations so the tool can be used as a transparent reference, not as a black-box answer. For legal boundaries, safety-critical routing, surveying, engineering, regulated decisions or official statistics, verify the result with the responsible authority or a qualified professional.
Category: Places & Population. Results are intended for everyday analysis and planning unless a page explicitly states otherwise.
Method, assumptions & limits
- This tool’s method
- Bulk postcodes.io lookup for UK codes, Zippopotam for US ZIPs, haversine ranking, all client-side.
- Before relying on the answer
- Check whether the result counts dataset points, administrative areas or an estimated population footprint. Record the source vintage when provided.
- What the result cannot establish
- Settlement points and area totals do not represent a complete count of residents inside an arbitrary shape. Survey estimates also carry uncertainty.
Coverage: Worldwide. Search, basemap and external data requests may use third-party services; browser-based does not mean every operation is offline. Read the source and licence notes, calculation methodology and privacy policy. If a result looks inconsistent, report a correction with the inputs and mode used.
Frequently asked questions
Clear answers about the calculation, accuracy and appropriate use.
Is my list uploaded anywhere?
The UK codes are sent to postcodes.io in a bulk request and US ZIPs are sent to Zippopotam individually. The workspace does not upload the list to MapBench.
Which codes are supported?
Full UK postcodes and 5-digit US ZIP codes, up to 50 per run.
Is this an official census result?
Only when a page explicitly uses and labels an official census dataset. Many tools are estimates or curated dataset summaries and explain that limitation on the page.
Why might population figures differ from another website?
Population values can use different census years, boundaries, estimates and definitions of city or metro area.
Can I use the result for market planning?
Yes as an exploratory reference, but validate commercial decisions with current official or specialist demographic data.
US ZIPs or UK postcodes — both?
Both families are the tool's home ground, matched within whichever list you paste. Mixed lists rank together once each code resolves to its centroid.
What if a code on my list cannot be found?
Unmatched, unsupported or failed lookups are omitted without an individual report. Compare your input list with the output before relying on it.
Nearest by road instead?
This finder ranks by straight-line (centroid) distance — the fast, explainable rule. Road-nearest is the routing family's different answer; for close calls, check the winner by road.
How many codes can the list hold?
The current workspace accepts at most 50 entries per run.
Multiple points at once?
One point per query here — the assignment question is per-customer by nature. Batch assignment belongs to a spreadsheet or GIS wearing this same distance rule.
Exact ties?
Resolved results are listed by distance. Displayed rounding can make nearby values look equal; the tool does not provide a special tie policy.
Why not just use the single nearest postcode tool?
Because your network is the constraint. The generic nearest ignores your depots; this finder's list is the business logic, and the geometry serves it.
