Australia Postcodes by State & Suburb
Type a suburb with its state — “Fremantle WA” — and collect the postcodes recorded on addresses around it, with distances. Built from open data, and honest about it: Australia Post's own list is the official one.

For example, Sydney's 2000, Melbourne's 3000 and Perth's 6000 show the system's logic at a glance: in most states the thousands digit is the state's signature.
How to use Australia Postcodes by State & Suburb
Australia's postcodes are allocated in state blocks. Browse them the way they were issued:
Australia Postcodes by State & Suburb organises Australian postcodes the way Australia Post allocates them — by state and territory, then by suburb. Pick a state and browse its ranges: the 2xxx block is New South Wales, 3xxx Victoria, 4xxx Queensland, and so on across the national postcode map.
- 1Type the suburb and state.
- 2Press “Find postcodes”.
- 3Browse the codes by distance from the centre.
What people use Australia Postcodes by State & Suburb for
1. Address and form validation
A postcode that starts with 7 cannot be in Victoria — the state blocks make a first-pass sanity check for Australian address data before any lookup runs.
2. Delivery and territory planning
Service areas in Australia are quoted by postcode ranges. The state blocks turn a coverage promise ('all of metro Sydney') into an enumerable list.
3. Data cleaning
Suburb-postcode mismatches in a CRM surface fastest when the state's whole range is in front of you — browse the block and the strangers stand out.
4. Relocating within Australia
Learning a new city's postcode neighbourhoods — Sydney spans 2000 out past 2234 into the greater metro — is how newcomers build their mental map. Distances across it price out with the Driving Distance Calculator.
Worked examples
The 2000 (Sydney CBD) and 3000 (Melbourne CBD) centroids sit about 713 km apart — the two biggest postcode blocks' capitals, an overnight drive apart. The blocks' capitals define most Australians' sense of the system.
Darwin is 0800, in the Northern Territory's 0xxx block — always write the zero. Dropping it (800) breaks forms, sorts and lookups, the most common Australian postcode bug in imported data.
Postcode blocks by state and territory
Australia Post's allocation — the thousands digit does most of the work.
| State / Territory | Main ranges | Capital's postcode |
|---|---|---|
| New South Wales | 2000–2599 (plus 2618–2620 shared ACT border area) | Sydney 2000 |
| Victoria | 3000–3999 | Melbourne 3000 |
| Queensland | 4000–4999 | Brisbane 4000 |
| South Australia | 5000–5999 | Adelaide 5000 |
| Western Australia | 6000–6999 | Perth 6000 |
| Tasmania | 7000–7999 | Hobart 7000 |
| Northern Territory | 0800–0899 | Darwin 0800 |
| Australian Capital Territory | 2600–2617 | Canberra 2600 |
Ranges are the allocation blocks in general use; individual postcodes are created, retired and shared by suburbs over time, and a handful of codes serve large mail users. Australia Post's own lookup is the authority for a specific address.

Method, assumptions & limits
- This tool’s method
- Photon geocoding plus an Overpass around-query collecting and deduplicating addr:postcode values.
- Before relying on the answer
- Check whether the result counts dataset points, administrative areas or an estimated population footprint. Record the source vintage when provided.
- What the result cannot establish
- Settlement points and area totals do not represent a complete count of residents inside an arbitrary shape. Survey estimates also carry uncertainty.
Coverage: Worldwide. Search, basemap and external data requests may use third-party services; browser-based does not mean every operation is offline. Read the source and licence notes, calculation methodology and privacy policy. If a result looks inconsistent, report a correction with the inputs and mode used.
Frequently asked questions
Clear answers about the calculation, accuracy and appropriate use.
How are the postcodes collected?
From addr:postcode tags on OpenStreetMap addresses within about 9 miles (15 km) of the suburb's centre, deduplicated.
Is coverage complete?
Urban coverage is good; rural postcodes with few mapped addresses can be missing. Australia Post publishes the authoritative list.
Is this an official census result?
Only when a page explicitly uses and labels an official census dataset. Many tools are estimates or curated dataset summaries and explain that limitation on the page.
Why might population figures differ from another website?
Population values can use different census years, boundaries, estimates and definitions of city or metro area.
Can I use the result for market planning?
Yes as an exploratory reference, but validate commercial decisions with current official or specialist demographic data.
Why do some postcodes serve many suburbs?
A postcode is a mail-sorting area, not a suburb boundary — dense city centres stack many suburbs into one code, while rural codes spread across a district. Suburb and postcode are cousins, not twins.
Can a suburb have several postcodes?
Yes — large suburbs split across codes, and new developments redraw the map. The browse shows the common allocations; an exact address belongs to Australia Post's finder.
What about PO Box and large-user postcodes?
Some codes exist only for post office boxes or single large recipients and never appear on a street map. Their absence from suburb lists is correct behaviour.
Islands and external territories?
Christmas Island (6798), Cocos (6799) and Norfolk Island (2899) sit inside the state blocks' leftovers — the ranges table's fine print, findable in their host blocks.
How current is the list?
Postcode allocations change as Australia Post creates and retires codes. Treat this browse as the reference map of the system; verify a critical address at the source.
Postcodes versus time zones or area codes?
No relation — telephone area codes (02, 03, 07, 08) roughly echo states by historical accident of the same federation, but the systems are independent.
Why does NSW include 2620 near Canberra?
Geography ignores the territory border — a few NSW postcodes wrap around the ACT. The table notes the shared corner rather than hiding it.
