Store Locator Map Builder
The working core of every store locator: your locations as Name, latitude, longitude — a visitor point — and the nearest stores ranked and mapped. Your list is processed in this tab and never uploaded.

This is a browser-based ranking tool, not a publishable store-locator service.
How to use Store Locator Map Builder
Your locations, a map, and honest nearest-first ranking:
Paste lines in Name, latitude, longitude format, then choose a visitor point to rank stores by straight-line distance. The list stays in this tab; no deployable locator or directions are generated.
- 1Paste stores as Name, lat, lng (or drop a CSV).
- 2Set the visitor location, or use device location.
- 3Read the ranked stores on the map and list.
What people use Store Locator Map Builder for
1. Independent retailers and cafes
Compare a visitor point with a list of branch coordinates in this tab. Separately, see the Share Location Link Generator for per-store share links.
2. Service and franchise networks
Clinics, gyms, depots and agents: any network whose customers ask 'which is nearest to me?' gets its answer from its own list, not a directory's.
3. Event and pop-up locations
Compare temporary site coordinates against a chosen point. The list is not published or saved as a hosted map.
4. Internal territory checks
Plot the network and look at it: gaps and overlaps are visible on a locator map in a way a spreadsheet of addresses never shows. The Voronoi Map Generator is a separate click-based tool; it does not import this store list.
Worked examples
The ranking example above uses straight-line distance — the locator's honest first sort (its own base FAQ asks exactly this). The nearest by air is occasionally not the nearest by road; mature locators say which measure they rank by.
A locator with a stale address is worse than none — it sends a customer to a shuttered shop with total confidence. The builder makes rebuilding cheap precisely so the list stays young.
A good locator's ingredients
What visitors judge you by, in order.
| Ingredient | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Store name and coordinates | One entry per line |
| Visitor location | Search or use device location |
| Distance shown per result | Straight-line ranking, not road travel |
Store data stays yours — the base FAQs cover where the list goes (processed in the browser for this tool's workflow) and remind you that customer-facing accuracy is a maintenance job, not a launch event.
How to interpret the result
The most common errors come from using a correct result to answer the wrong geographic question. Keep these points in mind for Store Locator Map Builder:
- Choose colour for category, not decoration: two or three high-contrast hues read instantly; a rainbow reads as noise. Labels carry identity, colour carries grouping, and the viewport should crop tightly to the subject.
- Export twice: an image for the slide and a data format (GeoJSON/CSV) for the record. The image communicates; the data survives editing, and the pair keeps your map honest and reusable.
Limits & appropriate use
Custom maps inherit two honest limits: the basemap's and the message's. The basemap is OpenStreetMap's current picture with its ODbL attribution ask, and its gaps — new roads, thin rural detail — travel into every export that includes tiles. The message limit is design's classic one: a map can carry one argument well, and beyond a few dozen symbols the right instrument changes to data-driven mapping with clustering and categories. Both limits are stated where they matter, because the alternative is a beautiful figure that misleads its own author.
Within those bounds the workflow is complete and durable: pins, labels, colours, tight framing, pixel-ratio PNG for the slide, GeoJSON/CSV for the record, URL-state for the living version. Escalation is gentle by design — choropleths and territory shading belong to GIS with real boundaries (the blank-map library and GeoJSON exports feed it), cartographic print production wants vector pipelines, and brand-strict design systems want tokens this tool deliberately doesn't fake.
- Data-dense maps → CSV-to-map with clustering and category colour.
- Boundary shading/choropleth → GIS with census or OSM boundaries.
- Print cartography → vector exports into a design pipeline.
Data & methodology
Client-side CSV parsing plus haversine ranking against the visitor point.
For source details, licences and model limitations, see Data Sources and Methodology.
Key terms worth knowing
- Pixel-ratio export
- PNG export at device resolution for crisp slides and print.
- Viewport framing
- Cropping the map tightly to the subject so the message fills the frame.
Editorial guidance: MapBench explains the method and limitations so the tool can be used as a transparent reference, not as a black-box answer. For legal boundaries, safety-critical routing, surveying, engineering, regulated decisions or official statistics, verify the result with the responsible authority or a qualified professional.

Method, assumptions & limits
- This tool’s method
- Client-side CSV parsing plus haversine ranking against the visitor point.
- Before relying on the answer
- Inspect the labels, map extent and export options in the workspace. Test the exported or shared version rather than assuming it matches your current screen.
- What the result cannot establish
- Map styling does not verify a location or grant rights to third-party data. Keep attribution with any reused basemap or dataset.
Coverage: Worldwide. Search, basemap and external data requests may use third-party services; browser-based does not mean every operation is offline. Read the source and licence notes, calculation methodology and privacy policy. If a result looks inconsistent, report a correction with the inputs and mode used.
Frequently asked questions
Clear answers about the calculation, accuracy and appropriate use.
Where does my store list go?
The list is parsed in this tab. Address searches and map tiles contact external providers. The embed generator creates a single-marker map, not a permanent store locator.
Are distances road distances?
Straight-line, which is how locator rankings are conventionally shown; the nearest by road can differ near rivers and motorways.
Can I share the map or output?
Many MapBench tools support shareable URLs or exports. Check the tool controls and the source-data licence before republishing externally.
Which export format should I choose?
Use PNG for presentation, CSV for tabular data, and GeoJSON/KML/GPX when geographic geometry needs to remain editable.
Will a shared link preserve my settings?
Tools that store state in the URL can reopen that configuration. Sensitive or private data should not be placed in public URLs.
What format should my location list be in?
Enter one store per line as Name, latitude, longitude. Store addresses are not geocoded by this tool.
Can I publish this as a locator?
No. This workspace ranks stores in the current tab; it does not create an embeddable multi-store application.
Does it provide driving directions or store hours?
No. Results show names and straight-line distances only.
Is my data uploaded?
The store list is processed in the browser tab. Location search and map tiles use external services, which receive the relevant search or map requests.
