The returned OSM outline may contain multiple polygon parts; check the match and coverage.

Simple workflow

How to use Country Boundary Downloader

Choose a listed country and check the match:

Choose one of the listed countries to retrieve the first polygon match from Nominatim, download its geometry, and see an approximate spherical area. This is not an official land-area figure.

  1. 1Choose the country.
  2. 2Press “Get the boundary”.
  3. 3Download KML or GeoJSON.

What people use Country Boundary Downloader for

1. Teaching and publishing maps

Use the matched outline for a map or report after checking its source and geographic coverage.

2. GIS clipping and masking

Clip global datasets to one country, or mask everything outside it. The boundary file is the cookie cutter; your data is the dough.

3. Web map backdrops

Country-highlight maps (pickers, coverage graphics, election explainers) start from the outline — the Boundary KML Downloader covers the cities and counties below this level.

4. Area verification

The computed enclosed area lets you sanity-check published country areas — outline-derived figures and almanac figures should broadly agree, and the differences are instructive.

Worked examples

Example · Archipelago nations

Some returned country features contain several polygon parts. Inspect the matched feature before using the download.

Example · Mainland plus islands

Detached parts or holes depend on the specific geometry returned by Nominatim.

How to interpret the result

The most common errors come from using a correct result to answer the wrong geographic question. Keep these points in mind for Country Boundary Downloader:

  • Keep the original file even after converting: GPX→GeoJSON drops timestamps' context, KML→GeoJSON drops styling, and every pipeline has a lossy edge. Originals are cheap; re-acquisition is not.
  • Validate before trusting exports from unfamiliar tools — open them in a local viewer and check feature counts, bounding boxes and a few property rows. A wrong-axis or swapped-coordinate export is far easier to catch on a map than in a spreadsheet.

Limits & appropriate use

File formats support different combinations of geometry, timestamps, properties and styling. Converting between them can lose information, so keep the original and inspect the output before sharing or using it.

Capabilities differ by workspace: check the accepted format and the operations actually offered on this page. Some tools process files locally but may request map tiles or other services over the network; large or specialised datasets may require dedicated GIS software.

  • Cadastral/legal formats → jurisdictional land-registry exports.
  • Point clouds and rasters → desktop GIS with proper spatial indexes.
  • Certified tracks (evidence, insurance) → chain-of-custody originals, untouched.

Data & methodology

Nominatim polygon retrieval for the country feature plus spherical area summation across all polygon parts.

For source details, licences and model limitations, see Data Sources and Methodology.

Key terms worth knowing

GeoJSON
JSON geographic format; the web-mapping native dialect.
KML
XML format from the Google Earth era, with styling and ExtendedData.

Editorial guidance: MapBench explains the method and limitations so the tool can be used as a transparent reference, not as a black-box answer. For legal boundaries, safety-critical routing, surveying, engineering, regulated decisions or official statistics, verify the result with the responsible authority or a qualified professional.

Category: Map Files. Results are intended for everyday analysis and planning unless a page explicitly states otherwise.

Method, assumptions & limits

This tool’s method
Nominatim polygon retrieval for the country feature plus spherical area summation across all polygon parts.
Before relying on the answer
Inspect the accepted file format and the fields reported by this specific tool. Keep a copy of the original file before converting or editing it.
What the result cannot establish
File geometry and recorded timestamps can be incomplete. Verify row or point counts and inspect the exported file in your target application.

Coverage: Worldwide. Search, basemap and external data requests may use third-party services; browser-based does not mean every operation is offline. Read the source and licence notes, calculation methodology and privacy policy. If a result looks inconsistent, report a correction with the inputs and mode used.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers about the calculation, accuracy and appropriate use.

Are islands included?

The export contains the polygon parts returned by Nominatim for the matched feature, but coverage and completeness are not guaranteed.

Whose borders are these?

OpenStreetMap's community mapping; disputed areas follow OSM's on-the-ground rule.

Is my uploaded map file sent to a server?

Where a page says browser-first or local processing, the file is handled in your browser. Check the individual tool note for any external-service dependency.

What should I do if a file will not load?

Check that the file type is supported, the structure is valid and the file is within the stated size limits. Converting to GeoJSON, GPX, KML or CSV can also help.

Will converting a file preserve every property?

Not always. Geographic formats support different geometry, style and metadata features, so inspect the output before relying on it.

Which countries are available?

The selector has a fixed list of 24 countries, not every country. A polygon match is not guaranteed.

Are overseas territories included?

Coverage follows the returned feature; verify whether a territory is included independently.

KML or GeoJSON?

KML for Google Earth and sharing; GeoJSON for GIS, web maps and code. Same outline in both — choose by destination, not by data.

Why is the file so large?

Coastlines are fractal in spirit: detailed countries carry hundreds of thousands of outline points. Size is fidelity. Simplify in your GIS if your use allows it.

Can I get just one island or region?

Use the Boundary KML Downloader for sub-national outlines — provinces, states and islands with their own administrative records live there.

Are enclaves handled?

Holes in the returned polygon geometry are exported, but their presence depends on the matched OSM record.

Whose borders for disputed areas?

OpenStreetMap’s documented position, as with all boundary data here. The file is a working geometry, not a diplomatic ruling.
