Which Countries Span the Most Longitude?

We compare country bounding boxes in the world-atlas/Natural Earth geometry dataset and rank the widest non-antimeridian longitude spans.

By Aladdin, Founder & Editor of MapBench
Research question: Which country geometries span the greatest number of longitude degrees in this generalized world dataset?

What the ranking shows

This compares west-to-east bounding-box span in degrees for geometries that do not require antimeridian handling.

Russia ranks first in the filtered comparison at about 170.4° of longitude.

Method

We use d3-geo bounds and exclude spans greater than 180° to avoid treating antimeridian-wrapping geometry as a simple west-to-east box.

Important caveat

These country rankings use generalized world-atlas/Natural Earth geometry intended for small-scale mapping. Polygon area, bounds and centroid can differ from official national statistics because coastlines, islands, disputed boundaries and geometry detail are represented differently.

Use these results as a reproducible comparison of one consistent public world geometry dataset, not as a replacement for official land-area or legal-boundary figures.

Reproduce the measurements

Use MapBench tools and the downloadable dataset to check individual values or reproduce the ranking.
