California remains America's most populous state with an estimated 39,431,263 residents as of July 1, 2024, followed by Texas (31,290,831) and Florida (23,372,215). At the other end, Wyoming is the least populous state with just 587,618 people — meaning California holds roughly 67 times Wyoming's population. The top five states alone (California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania) are home to well over a third of all Americans.
These are the Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 estimates — the official annual update between decennial censuses, built from births, deaths, and migration records. Puerto Rico (3,203,295, ranked 33rd here for reference) and the District of Columbia (ranked 50th) are included alongside the 50 states.
How to read this table
States are ranked 1–52 by their July 1, 2024 resident population estimate. Figures are estimates, not exact headcounts, and are revised each December when a new vintage is released.
Populations shape everything from congressional seats to market sizes. To go deeper, estimate the population within a radius of any address, compare population density between places, or put two cities head-to-head.
